All New Phones in Canada Must be Unlocked

Starting in December, Canadian carriers will get rid of their unlocking fees and any new phones being sold in the country must be unlocked. According to CBC, this ruling will be in affect by December 1st, 2017.

Canada is currently one of the countries that's paying the most for mobile service, which leads to Canadian citizens trying to unlock their device and try to move that device to a cheaper carrier. Canadian citizens had to pay a $50 unlocking fee (around $40 USD) and added up to approximately $38 CAD.

With carriers try to defend themselves, the CRTC ended the argument with this ruling, forcing carriers to unlock customers phones for free.
