Can Alexa Replace Your Home Phone?

Since we currently live in the digital age. all of us rely more on smartphones as a way to communicate with people and that includes calling. Our smartphones are now getting to the point where we can get rid of our landlines and replace it with these devices and I can see why. By having a landline at home, the only way of long distance communication is at home and at home only, by having a smartphone we can live our daily lives and not be stuck at home if we want to communicate with friends or family.

Another topic that’s brought up about living in the digital age are smarthomes, how we can automate and communicate with with our homes, and the most popular smarthome product is the Amazon Echo or Alexa. Alexa and other AI interfaces allows us to communicate with our homes through our smartphones and speakers, and Alexa wants us to communicate with more than our homes.

About a few weeks, Amazon released a new Echo device called the Echo Show, with the main selling point being it’s 7in display, with that display, it enables the ability to video call anyone with an Echo Show or the Alexa companion app. Which leads to Amazon announcing that voice calling and messaging will be available on all Echo devices, giving the users the ability to call and message Echo to Echo or Echo to App. You could call the Echo an updated version of a landline. But can Alexa actually replace a landline? To be short, no, it can’t.

Right now you can only call friends and family who have an Echo device or the app. It may be a popular smarthome device but Amazon needs to expand its power by letting users linking it to a phone number or allowing users to get a phone number to call others who don’t have an Echo device. Right now, I think I’ll let Alexa control my music and smarthome devices and communicate by using my smartphone.
